TAIPEI FRIENDSHIP GUIDE

How to Make Friends in Taipei as an International Student

By Yi, founder of Taipei Weekend Social

School gives you people to see each day. Making friends beyond class takes a different kind of plan. Try these small steps this week.

Choose a place outside your class

Your classmates are a good start, but they don’t have to be your whole circle. Try one activity open to people from other schools and to locals: a sports group, a hobby meetup or a hosted social. Check the language, price and whether newcomers can join.

Make the invitation easy to answer

Ask a classmate to try something beyond campus: “I’m going to this social on Friday. Want to join?” If they can’t come, you can still go. Tell a host you’re new rather than waiting for someone to notice.

Talk about life, not just language

Try “What do you like doing after class?” or “Is there a place nearby you recommend?” Share your answer too. If you want to try Mandarin, ask whether the other person is comfortable with it. A new friend doesn’t have to become your language tutor.

Build around your school week

Choose a regular time that fits your classes. Returning to one group makes it easier to remember names and continue earlier conversations. The group may change, so leave room for new faces.

Follow up with a clear plan

After a good conversation, ask if they’d like to stay in touch. “Lunch near campus on Tuesday?” is easier to answer than “Let’s hang out sometime.” If they’re busy or don’t reply, give them space.

Try a hosted evening with us

Meet locals and international guests at our Friday and Saturday socials. Hosts help with introductions. RSVP online and pay at the venue; check Luma for current dates and details.
