TAIPEI FRIENDSHIP GUIDE

New to Taipei? How to Make Friends and Build a Social Life

By Yi, founder of Taipei Weekend Social

I felt lonely after returning to Taipei from life abroad. I missed the easy chances to meet people. A social life starts with small plans you can repeat.

Make room for people in your first week

Housing, work and daily tasks can fill every day. Put one social plan in your week before the weekend arrives. Pick something near your usual route so getting there doesn’t become another difficult task.

Choose one group you can return to

Look for clear dates, a real venue and a welcome for newcomers. Ask what happens when someone arrives alone. A regular hobby group or hosted social gives you a reason to show up again. You don’t need to join five communities at once.

Keep local and international connections

Other newcomers may understand what you’re figuring out. Locals and longer-term residents bring different interests and experiences. Ask about something you share, rather than making every conversation about settling in.

Make a plan that fits your stay

On a working holiday, your schedule may change. Suggest a plan for the coming week instead of a long commitment. If you work regular hours, choose a repeating time you can usually keep.

Turn a hello into a second meeting

After exchanging details, send a short message about something you discussed and suggest a time to meet. Make it easy to decline. Next time, introduce them to someone else you know; a circle can grow through small connections.

Give it more than one evening

Some conversations stay as one good night. Others become friendships. Try returning a few times, while noticing whether you feel comfortable. You don’t have to force a fit.

Try a hosted evening with us

Meet locals and international guests at our Friday and Saturday socials. Hosts help with introductions. RSVP online and pay at the venue; check Luma for current dates and details.
