TAIPEI FRIENDSHIP GUIDE

Traveling Solo in Taipei? Easy Ways to Make Friends and Break the Ice

By Yi, founder of Taipei Weekend Social

Traveling alone is great. You can go where you want and make your own plans.

But sometimes, you want someone to eat with, talk to, or share your day with.

I know that feeling.

I traveled alone in Europe for a year. I also spent a year in Australia and a year in Japan on working holidays.

When I came back to Taipei, I felt lonely. I missed meeting travelers and making friends from different countries.

That’s why I started Taipei Weekend Social. I’ve been running events for over two years.

Here are a few simple ways to meet people during your stay.

Do something together

It can be hard to walk into a bar alone and start talking to strangers.

Doing something together makes it easier. You already have something to talk about.

Try:

Choose something you like. You don’t have to go to a big party if that’s not your thing.

Start with one person

You don’t need to talk to everyone.

Try a simple question:

Share a little about yourself, too. You don’t need perfect English or Chinese to say hello.

Make a small plan

If you enjoy talking to someone, ask if they want to do something together.

“Want to get some food?” is enough.

You could meet for coffee the next day or visit a place you both want to see.

You won’t become friends with everyone. That’s okay. Start with one conversation.
